The Treaty of Portsmouth

September 5, 1905. The treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War — the first international peace treaty signed on U.S. soil. Roosevelt directed it by telegraph and never came to town; the hospitality was organized entirely by the people of Portsmouth and New Hampshire.
