The Battle of Bunker Hill

Tags#revolution #colonial #boston

June 17, 1775, fought mostly on adjacent Breed's Hill after Colonel Prescott and General Israel Putnam made a still-unexplained last-minute decision to dig in on the more exposed hill. A technical British win — they took the hill after three assaults — but at a cost of over 1,000 men against about 450 American losses, shattering British confidence in a quick victory.

Joseph Warren died here as a private. Roughly 150 Black and Indigenous soldiers fought in an integrated militia, including Salem Poor and Jude Hall. Commemorated by the Bunker Hill Monument.
