Sue Bailey Thurman

Historian who founded the Museum of African American History in 1963–64. In 1935–36 she became the first African American woman to meet Gandhi, later helping bring his philosophy of nonviolence into the American civil rights movement. She created a hand-drawn "Negro Freedom Trails of Boston" map of 22 sites — the direct forerunner of today's Black Heritage Trail.
